    History of West Interior Services

Thomas A. Kuhns, Jr. founded West Interior Services Inc. in 1973 and located his first shop with its two employees in Tarentum because he always enjoyed working with furniture but didn't want to compete with his family's reupholstery business.

The furniture and woodwork repair, restoration and refinishing service has served customers from as far away as historic Charleston, South Carolina, Saudi Arabia and even beneath the Atlantic Ocean.

Tom remembers well the maple dinette table a local resident brought to him. The table was a contemporary yet unique drop-leaf style designed to fit into the tight spaces of a ship.

It seems that this piece of furniture was what the customer, a recreational deep-sea diver, wanted as a souvenir of a sunken ship being salvaged.

Surprisingly, the table was in relatively good condition considering it had been submerged beneath the the ocean. The salt water hadn't warped it although the finish was gone. West Interior Services refinished it to the satisfaction of the diver.

One of West Interior Services biggest projects was restoring the heavily damaged altar and interior of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul in Charleston, South Carolina. The altar was a hand-carved, mahogany piece that came to West Interior Services in baskets following the destruction of Hurricane Hugo.

The church had sustained much water and storm surge damage but it was the high winds that nearly destroyed the altar. The wind had picked up a cornice stone and as if it were aimed that way, drove it through the roof of the church and to a direct hit on the altar.

Tom said it was much like putting together a beautiful, three dimensional jig-saw puzzle since workers used the original, one-of-a-kind wood to reconstruct the piece.

Another example of our specialty work includes refinishing costly Steinway pianos, instruments that can cost between $35,000 and $40,000 to buy.

West Interior Services does a lot of claim related damage restoration and also works with fire restoration companies.
